Jaya Darriet holds a BA in Literature and Arts, and a MA in Literature, Arts and Contemporary Thought from the University of Paris VII (France). In 2024, she graduated from her MFA in Visual Arts with a minor in Documentary Filmmaking from California State University, Northridge.
Through a poetic and accidental practice, her work unfolds a fragmented narrative of her nomadic life. Jaya's work fluctuates across disciplines, including photography, videography, installation and writing. Her research delves into the dichotomy between stillness and movement; it researches the way humans inhabit space and their ambiguous perception of the passage of time.
Jaya has exhibited in New Wight Gallery (UCLA), Peggy Phelps Gallery (University of Claremont), Bienal de Arte Universitario (UAEMEX), Centro Cultural de Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico City) and Creativity Crisis Center (L.A.). She was awarded with the Virginia Orndoff Prize (2023) and received the Matadors Council Grant (2024) for her project “diaphanous”. She currently lives in Los Angeles where she lectures in the Photography Department at California State University, Northridge.
